art : obsession.3772
mural | november 2001
For this mural I taped 3,772 two-inch squares together to create a picture 8 feet tall by 15 feet wide. Each square is a miniature picture of the overall mural modified into ten different shades. The squares were mounted with clear tape on all four sides. This piece was about numbers, it was about process, and it was a challenge to finish on a deadline. I did not keep track of the time, but this mural represents around 150 hours of work. One of the most rewarding aspects of this project for myself is that I created it on the wall of my dorm room, not able to get enough distance from the mural to see if the picture was even going to be recognizable. I first saw the entire picture after it was hanging on display at the end of a hallway at CalArts.
